Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall

FutureC+
The phones sank the Chargers this weekend: D-. The Chargers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Carson Hinzman at Round 7, Pick 17 regardless, 40 picks early.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Mukuba. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka at No. 21 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49
Rnd2
Patrick Payton
A tidy little value on Patrick Payton in pick No. 49, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick53
Rnd2
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey at Round 2, Pick 21 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick79
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Value with a capital V on Andrew Mukuba in pick 79, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick80
Rnd3
Donovan Edwards
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Edwards. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick111
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
This one needs a full-page explanation: DJ Campbell in the 111th overall pick, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick143
Rnd5
Gentry Williams
Gentry Williams in slot 143 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177
Rnd6
Jaishawn Barham
Nothing to complain about; Jaishawn Barham went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick207
Rnd7
Sean Martin
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sean Martin well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick209
Rnd7
Carson Hinzman
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Carson Hinzman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
