Draft Grade — Vikings

The Vikings kept it disciplined and banked a B. The Vikings clearly saw something nobody else did in Jacob Rodriguez, taking him 39 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
It is not that Rodriguez is a bad player; it is that the Vikings had louder needs to answer first. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Hood falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In No. 28 they get a three-down second-level presence at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick56
Rnd2
Connor Lew
Connor Lew at the 56th pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick79
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Michael Taaffe for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick87
Rnd3
Colton Hood
Colton Hood in Round 3, Pick 23 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick97
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at the 97th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick113
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at slot 113 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Jacob Rodriguez in No. 123 leaves edge rusher and tight end for later.
Pick169
Rnd5
Sawyer Robertson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sawyer Robertson in Round 5, Pick 29, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick210
Rnd6
Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney at pick No. 210 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick228
Rnd7
Bear Alexander
A big swing on Bear Alexander at the 228th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
