Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesB FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Chargers a B-.

Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chargers shredded theirs for Joey Slackman. He came off 94 spots early, and the room will hear about it. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

Higgins at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.

Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Tate Ratledge
In the 29th pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick55 Rnd2 Jayden Higgins
They reached into another round for Jayden Higgins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick62 Rnd2 Jake Majors
A real head-scratcher, Jake Majors in slot 62 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick86 Rnd3 Jack Bech
Jack Bech in pick No. 86 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122 Rnd4 Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick158 Rnd5 Simeon Barrow Jr.
They jumped the gun on Simeon Barrow Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick177 Rnd6 Joey Slackman
A wild overpay on Joey Slackman in Round 6, Pick 2, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick197 Rnd6 Jay Higgins
Steal is underselling it; Jay Higgins at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick208 Rnd6 Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at No. 208 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick213 Rnd6 Cam Skattebo
They will replay Cam Skattebo at the 213th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick220 Rnd7 Hunter Wohler
Hunter Wohler is a better player than slot 220 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jonas Sanker
They barely believed it either: Jonas Sanker still on the board at pick 252. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
