The 49ers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Kyle Williams in the Round 3 slot. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Walker. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in No. 43, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick44
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
A tidy bit of business in the 44th pick, where Derrick Harmon graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick74
Rnd3
Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch at Round 3, Pick 10 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick75
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
By-the-book stuff, Mason Taylor at pick No. 75 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick76
Rnd3
Shemar Turner
They paid a round early for Shemar Turner in slot 76, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick97
Rnd3
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick100
Rnd3
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams in pick 100 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Smael Mondon Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick114
Rnd4
Logan Brown
Value said wait; Logan Brown in the 114th overall pick says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins
A big swing on Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick147
Rnd5
Damien Martinez
A premium they did not need to pay, Damien Martinez a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick160
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at Round 5, Pick 22 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick227
Rnd7
Robert Longerbeam
Robert Longerbeam in the 227th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick249
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
A straight-up fair deal on Teddye Buchanan at No. 249, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in Round 7, Pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
