Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The 49ers turned the phones into found money: B+.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the 49ers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Ransom falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
In pick No. 17 they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24 Rnd1 Shavon Revel Jr.
In No. 24 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Need was not the driver here.
Pick50 Rnd2 Marcus Mbow
Marcus Mbow at the 50th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick92 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant in pick 92 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
They took Jared Wilson at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113 Rnd4 Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom in slot 113 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick138 Rnd4 Cody Simon
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 36, with Cody Simon worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick147 Rnd5 Tyler Baron
Tyler Baron at the 147th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick160 Rnd5 Tommi Hill
They paid sticker price for Tommi Hill in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick193 Rnd6 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. is a better player than No. 193 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick227 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
No edge and no loss on Desmond Watson in pick No. 227; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249 Rnd7 Thomas Fidone II
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Thomas Fidone II. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick252 Rnd7 Corey Kiner
Nice patience on Corey Kiner, who had no business lasting to slot 252. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
