Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D. The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Omar Brown went at the 251st overall pick, a good 66 picks before the board was ready.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with running back and quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. Lovett at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick No. 4 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
No edge and no loss on Tyler Guyton in the 31st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
They let Christian Haynes come to them and pounced at the 63rd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Andru Phillips
Andru Phillips slipping to No. 94 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick124
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
A surprising call. With running back and quarterback still to address, they spent pick 124 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick132
Rnd4
Erick All
Erick All in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick135
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
The board had cheaper options than Luke McCaffrey at Round 4, Pick 35, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Jordan Magee
Jordan Magee in the 176th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick211
Rnd6
Fabien Lovett
Taking Fabien Lovett in the 211th pick is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick215
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Javontae Jean-Baptiste in slot 215. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick251
Rnd7
Omar Brown
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Omar Brown. It adds depth where they could use a little.
