FutureA+
Best value of the weekend goes to the Dolphins for Mateer: B+. You build a draft on nights like this. John Mateer had no business being available in Round 2, Pick 16, and the Dolphins did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
They will need Tiernan to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In slot 31 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot.
Pick48
Rnd2
John Mateer
Taking John Mateer in No. 48 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 31, with Sonny Styles worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick66
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick73
Rnd3
Drew Shelton
Drew Shelton at the 73rd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick108
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
Chase Bisontis at pick 108 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick136
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart at pick No. 136 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick146
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
A conviction pick on Aaron Graves at the 146th pick that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick152
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
A straight-up fair deal on Davison Igbinosun at pick No. 152, value and slot in agreement. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick218
Rnd6
DeAndre Moore Jr.
They let DeAndre Moore Jr. come to them and pounced at the 218th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick242
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
Brandon Inniss at pick 242 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick253
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
A premium they did not need to pay, Riley Mahlman a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
