The Dobbs reach set the tone, and the Patriots never recovered: F. Nobody had Jacob Dobbs this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 192 spots to get him at the 214th pick. It bottoms out at a F.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
With safety and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Getting Pearsall where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with safety still staring back at them.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In slot 4 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In pick 9 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Pick14
Rnd1
JC Latham
JC Latham in the 14th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick15
Rnd1
T'Vondre Sweat
In Round 1, Pick 15 they get a load in the middle, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at pick No. 34 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick36
Rnd2
Quinn Ewers
By-the-book stuff, Quinn Ewers at the 36th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 3, Pick 2, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick68
Rnd3
Jack Sawyer
A straight-up fair deal on Jack Sawyer at pick 68, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick78
Rnd3
D.J. James
They bypassed pressing needs at safety and running back to take D.J. James, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick139
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
They reached into another round for Ben Sinnott, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick180
Rnd6
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at pick No. 180 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick192
Rnd6
Hayden Hatten
Hayden Hatten in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jacob Dobbs
They talked themselves into Jacob Dobbs at the 214th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick223
Rnd7
Ricky Pearsall
You do not let a wide receiver like Ricky Pearsall reach No. 223 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
