Draft Grade — Chargers

Grand theft in pick No. 105: the Chargers steal Stover and grade out a B-.

The board owed the Chargers one, and it paid up: Cade Stover, the No. 83 name on the board, sitting there at pick 105 like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Every board in the league had McCaffrey lower, and that gap is the story. They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In pick No. 5 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick37 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at Round 2, Pick 5, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick69 Rnd3 Blake Corum
Blake Corum in pick 69 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick105 Rnd4 Cade Stover
Somehow Cade Stover was still sitting there in the 105th overall pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick110 Rnd4 DeWayne Carter
No drama and no debate, DeWayne Carter went about where he belonged in slot 110. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick140 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
They paid a round early for Luke McCaffrey in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick181 Rnd6 Decamerion Richardson
Fair-plus on Decamerion Richardson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick225 Rnd7 Evan Williams
By-the-book stuff, Evan Williams at the 225th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick253 Rnd7 Trente Jones
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trente Jones in the 253rd pick. It fills a real need, too.
