The phones sank the Commanders this weekend: D-. The war room fell hard for Jalen Thompson, and it showed at No. 232: 72 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
The Thieneman pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end and quarterback still on the board.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In slot 13 they get a rangy last line of defense at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick40
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
No edge and no loss on Sonny Styles in pick 40; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick61
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A surprising call. With tight end and quarterback still to address, they spent No. 61 on Dillon Thieneman, a safety they were not short of.
Pick62
Rnd2
Connor Lew
Good price on Connor Lew in the 62nd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
The board had A'Mauri Washington higher than the Round 3 slot, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick109
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in pick No. 109 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick146
Rnd5
Mike Washington Jr.
They took Mike Washington Jr. at par in pick 146, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick187
Rnd6
Duce Robinson
A tidy little value on Duce Robinson in the 187th overall pick, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick198
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick223
Rnd7
Kalil Alexander
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kalil Alexander in No. 223, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jalen Thompson
Value said wait; Jalen Thompson in Round 7, Pick 16 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
