Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Jay Higgins, the No. 121 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 185.

They will need Caldwell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
