Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA-
The Commanders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B+.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Michael Penix Jr. is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Commanders indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open.

Reaching for Pearsall left real value on the table behind him.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick34 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
They took Keon Coleman at par in Round 2, Pick 2, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick37 Rnd2 Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu in the 37th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick41 Rnd2 Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine in pick No. 41 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick42 Rnd2 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 42 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick47 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at slot 47 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick66 Rnd3 Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman open.
Pick100 Rnd3 MarShawn Lloyd
No edge and no loss on MarShawn Lloyd in the 100th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick102 Rnd4 Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland at the 102nd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick109 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
A curious use of pick 109. Interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a linebacker in Tommy Eichenberg did not.
Pick139 Rnd5 Jaheim Bell
No drama and no debate, Jaheim Bell went about where he belonged in pick No. 139. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180 Rnd6 Ricky Pearsall
They talked themselves into Ricky Pearsall at No. 180, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick223 Rnd7 Reuben Fatheree II
A reach for Reuben Fatheree II in Round 7, Pick 3; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
