Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

Nobody had Jaylon Hutchings this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 107 spots to get him at slot 247. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick42 Rnd2 Quinyon Mitchell
They barely believed it either: Quinyon Mitchell still on the board at No. 42. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick59 Rnd2 Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo at pick No. 59 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick87 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in pick 87 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick123 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at the 123rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127 Rnd4 Isaac Guerendo
They took Isaac Guerendo at par in slot 127, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick174 Rnd5 Jarrian Jones
Taking Jarrian Jones in Round 5, Pick 38 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick188 Rnd6 Christian Jones
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 188 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247 Rnd7 Jaylon Hutchings
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylon Hutchings this early at Round 7, Pick 27. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
