Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureD
Grand theft in slot 96: the Texans steal Golday and grade out a B.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Texans watched Jake Golday slide 32 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Iheanachor pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Peter Woods
In the 29th pick they get a disruptive interior force. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34 Rnd2 Max Iheanachor
The board had cheaper options than Max Iheanachor at pick 34, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
Pick38 Rnd2 Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon in No. 38 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick62 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. at slot 62 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Christen Miller
A tidy bit of business in Round 3, Pick 5, where Christen Miller graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick72 Rnd3 Jadarian Price
Value with a capital V on Jadarian Price in the 72nd overall pick, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick96 Rnd3 Jake Golday
Jake Golday at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick106 Rnd4 Sam Hecht
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sam Hecht at pick No. 106 is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick111 Rnd4 Nicholas Singleton
A straight-up fair deal on Nicholas Singleton at the 111th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick141 Rnd5 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp is a better player than pick No. 141 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick148 Rnd5 DeMonte Capehart
A quiet steal in slot 148: DeMonte Capehart for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick167 Rnd5 Beau Stephens
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Beau Stephens. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick171 Rnd5 Caleb Douglas
Caleb Douglas in No. 171 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick188 Rnd6 Aamil Wagner
Nice patience on Aamil Wagner, who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 7. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick189 Rnd6 Matt Gulbin
A reasonable price with a little left over, Matt Gulbin in pick 189. The roster fit checks out.
Pick229 Rnd7 Thaddeus Dixon
No drama and no debate, Thaddeus Dixon went about where he belonged in the 229th pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick243 Rnd7 Latrell McCutchin Sr.
Latrell McCutchin Sr. at the 243rd pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick247 Rnd7 Brent Austin
They paid sticker price for Brent Austin in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick256 Rnd7 Zavion Thomas
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 40 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
