Best value of the weekend goes to the Texans for Allen: B. The Texans did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and CJ Allen fell into pick 62.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Pregnon has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Peter Woods
In the 28th overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick29
Rnd1
Emmanuel Pregnon
In No. 29 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Max Iheanachor
A premium they did not need to pay, Max Iheanachor a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
Pick62
Rnd2
CJ Allen
Steal is underselling it; CJ Allen at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price is a better player than slot 69 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick108
Rnd4
Connor Lew
They barely believed it either: Connor Lew still on the board at the 108th pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick116
Rnd4
Chandler Rivers
Nice patience on Chandler Rivers, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 16. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick141
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kaleb Proctor in pick 141. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick167
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 167 with a little surplus value in Beau Stephens. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick176
Rnd5
Caleb Douglas
A tidy bit of business in the 176th overall pick, where Caleb Douglas graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick189
Rnd6
Seth McGowan
Seth McGowan in Round 6, Pick 8 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick195
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
A tidy little value on DJ Campbell in slot 195, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick243
Rnd7
Latrell McCutchin Sr.
A slide stopped in pick 243, with Latrell McCutchin Sr. worth more than the price. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
