Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans let Coleman fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

Somebody in the 69th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Texans sat still while Jonah Coleman, the No. 41 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

The cost of the Hemby reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Kayden McDonald
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a wrecking ball inside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
They paid sticker price for Olaivavega Ioane in the 38th overall pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick59 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman at pick 69 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106 Rnd4 Genesis Smith
Genesis Smith at the 106th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick128 Rnd4 Ar'maj Reed-Adams
No edge and no loss on Ar'maj Reed-Adams in slot 128; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick165 Rnd5 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jermaine Mathews Jr. in pick No. 165. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick243 Rnd7 Roman Hemby
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Roman Hemby well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick244 Rnd7 Tosh Baker
Tosh Baker at pick 244 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
