Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueC-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Texans: B-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Phillip Webb; the Texans did not wait, grabbing him 85 spots ahead at slot 241. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That is an interior defensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Armand Membou
Fair-plus on Armand Membou, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick63
Rnd2
Charles Grant
They reached into another round for Charles Grant, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick79
Rnd3
Deone Walker
The board had Deone Walker higher than the 79th overall pick, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick89
Rnd3
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 89 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick133
Rnd4
Rylie Mills
They paid sticker price for Rylie Mills in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick166
Rnd5
Marcus Yarns
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Marcus Yarns. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick241
Rnd7
Phillip Webb
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Phillip Webb well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
