Draft Grade — Cowboys

The Cowboys cashed the board's mistake on Milroe: C+. Somebody in pick No. 150 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Jalen Milroe, the No. 95 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 12th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick20
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In slot 20 they get a disruptive interior force. A real need, handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
A quiet steal in pick No. 44: Omarion Hampton for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick76
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge in the 76th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick90
Rnd3
Savion Williams
By-the-book stuff, Savion Williams at Round 3, Pick 26 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Danny Stutsman at the Round 3 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick126
Rnd4
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at No. 126 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jalen Milroe
Circle this one: Jalen Milroe at pick 150 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick170
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
Nothing to complain about; DJ Giddens went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
