Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureD-
The Bengals let Chestnut fall and pounced. Final grade: B-.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Duce Chestnut got past him. The Bengals do not have to explain a thing at No. 245. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Lachey pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Adding Justin Jefferson by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick88 Rnd3 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in Round 3, Pick 25 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick124 Rnd4 Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher in No. 124 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick161 Rnd5 Zy Alexander
By-the-book stuff, Zy Alexander at the 161st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick173 Rnd5 Lathan Ransom
They did well to land Lathan Ransom in pick 173, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick202 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
A straight-up fair deal on Curtis Jacobs at the 202nd pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick245 Rnd7 Duce Chestnut
Duce Chestnut at slot 245 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick254 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Frank Gore Jr.. A need, and now a little less of one.
