Jmo4 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the 49ers: B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent No. 252 on Keilan Robinson, a name the board had a full 82 spots lower. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They banked enough surplus on Jackson to cover a lot of smaller sins. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Graham Barton
In the 31st pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Worthy in slot 63, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94
Rnd3
Matt Goncalves
A reach for Matt Goncalves in pick 94; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98
Rnd3
Javon Foster
They left a pile of value on the table to take Javon Foster this early at the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in No. 131 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick177
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They liked Christian Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 177. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jordan Whittington
Jordan Whittington in pick No. 209 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick213
Rnd6
Evan Williams
This one needs a full-page explanation: Evan Williams in slot 213, miles early. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick215
Rnd6
McKade Mettauer
A big swing on McKade Mettauer at pick 215, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Keilan Robinson
Keilan Robinson at the 252nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
