FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Packers. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Malik Mustapha in pick No. 127. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Cooper DeJean
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cooper DeJean in the Round 2 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick43
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 43, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick59
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in No. 59; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick62
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
No drama and no debate, Ruke Orhorhoro went about where he belonged in pick 62. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick64
Rnd2
Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland in the 64th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick86
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
They paid up for Brenden Rice at the 86th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick109
Rnd4
Will Shipley
Will Shipley in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick123
Rnd4
Josh Newton
Josh Newton in slot 123 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick127
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at pick No. 127 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A minor itch, scratched.
