McCarthy is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D. The Bears spent real capital to be 97 picks early on Tanor Bortolini, and the board is going to hold them to it. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In No. 3 they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
Tyler Nubin in the 34th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Worthy at slot 51, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the 75th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick104
Rnd4
Javon Foster
They went early on Javon Foster in pick No. 104, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Pick111
Rnd4
McKinnley Jackson
The board had cheaper options than McKinnley Jackson at the 111th pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick120
Rnd4
Tanor Bortolini
They reached into another round for Tanor Bortolini, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick123
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in No. 123 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick133
Rnd4
Anthony Gould
A big swing on Anthony Gould at Round 4, Pick 33, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick143
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
No edge and no loss on Tykee Smith in pick 143; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick172
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at the 172nd overall pick, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
