McCarthy is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: C+. The Bears spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The cost of the McCarthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In slot 6 they get a long-term answer under center, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the 9th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
Tyler Nubin at pick 39 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick47
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
They went early on Zach Frazier in the Round 2 slot, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick51
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske at the 51st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul is a better player than No. 75 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick111
Rnd4
McKinnley Jackson
They liked McKinnley Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 11. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick120
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
A reach on Ben Sinnott in pick No. 120; the board had better options right there. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick123
Rnd4
Isaiah Adams
Isaiah Adams in the 123rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick143
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
No drama and no debate, Jacob Cowing went about where he belonged in the 143rd pick. The roster fit checks out.
