Draft Grade — Patriots

The Patriots checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

The Trey Moore selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 43 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Thieneman falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 KC Concepcion
In the 30th pick they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dillon Thieneman in the 62nd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94 Rnd3 Drew Shelton
Drew Shelton at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick124 Rnd4 Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch in pick No. 124 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick130 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis in pick 130 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick170 Rnd5 Trey Moore
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Moore this early at Round 5, Pick 30. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick192 Rnd6 Rayshaun Benny
They went early on Rayshaun Benny in slot 192, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick199 Rnd6 Le'Veon Moss
A reasonable price with a little left over, Le'Veon Moss in No. 199. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick207 Rnd6 Rasheem Biles
Rasheem Biles in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick210 Rnd6 Jaren Kanak
They paid up for Jaren Kanak at pick 210 when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick245 Rnd7 Nolan Rucci
Nolan Rucci at the 245th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
