The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.

The Carson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The Gargiulo pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.

The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
