Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
A-
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureA
The Panthers let Smith fall into their laps, and walked away with a A-. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Panthers came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Glaze pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, with Terrion Arnold leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Terrion Arnold
In pick 24 they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
A slide stopped in pick No. 33, with Keon Coleman worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick46
Rnd2
Jonah Elliss
A straight-up fair deal on Jonah Elliss at slot 46, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick77
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Haynes in the 77th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick82
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
Gabriel Murphy in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick113
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
A reach on Darius Robinson in No. 113; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick142
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
Circle this one: Ainias Smith at the 142nd pick is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick165
Rnd5
Delmar Glaze
They paid a round early for Delmar Glaze in the 165th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick180
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
By-the-book stuff, Curtis Jacobs at slot 180 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick219
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at pick 219 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick257
Rnd7
Trey Taylor
Good price on Trey Taylor in the Round 7 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
