John Z DRAFTING FOR THEBears
Draft Selections
Draft Picks Received
Draft Picks Traded
Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Bears a B+. Whoever sat across the table from the Bears should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Bishop falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The cost of the Powers-Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick No. 6 they get a weapon on the perimeter. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
In the 9th pick they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In slot 27 they get a cornerstone up front, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A reach for Jackson Powers-Johnson in the Round 2 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick47
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
A premium they did not need to pay, Ja'Tavion Sanders a notch or two before his time. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick66
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes in Round 3, Pick 2 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Johnny Wilson at pick 75, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick110
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
A reach on Darius Robinson in No. 110; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at slot 122 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick146
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
Value with a capital V on Cole Bishop in the 146th overall pick, a genuine coup. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
