FutureA
Ponds should have been long gone. The Jets pounced, and earned a A-. When a board-topper like D'Angelo Ponds slides to the Round 3 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Jets did not.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Allar pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Styles pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back still on the board.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 12th pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. More want than need.
Pick18
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In slot 18 they get a No. 1 receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick20
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
They bypassed pressing needs at running back to take Sonny Styles, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick44
Rnd2
Gabe Jacas
A conviction pick on Gabe Jacas at the 44th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick82
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
You do not let a cornerback like D'Angelo Ponds reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92
Rnd3
Jake Golday
Jake Golday in pick 92 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick97
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
Domonique Orange at No. 97 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Pick103
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley at pick No. 103 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick112
Rnd4
Connor Lew
Connor Lew in Round 4, Pick 12 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick140
Rnd4
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at pick No. 140 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick179
Rnd5
Taylen Green
A reach for Taylen Green in the 179th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick228
Rnd7
Eli Heidenreich
A reach on Eli Heidenreich in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
Pick242
Rnd7
Fa'alili Fa'amoe
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Fa'alili Fa'amoe. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
