Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B-
ValueD NeedC+ TradesA+ FutureB-
The Cowboys worked the phones like thieves and earned a B-.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent Round 5, Pick 38 on Patrick Payton, a name most had 59 spots down the list. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Spending an early pick on safety with wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Rod Moore
Rod Moore in the 28th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick47 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
A curious use of pick 47. Wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Dillon Thieneman did not.
Pick115 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
They paid sticker price for D'Angelo Ponds in the 115th overall pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick155 Rnd5 Bryce Boettcher
Bryce Boettcher at No. 155 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick178 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Patrick Payton in pick No. 178, miles early. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick179 Rnd5 Braylan Shelby
They reached into another round for Braylan Shelby, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
