Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureC-
Penix Jr. is the Patriots' new face under center. Grade: B.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Michael Penix Jr. is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop.

However the rest shakes out, Washington at that price is a win they earned. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will need Williams to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Spending an early pick on TE-EDGE with edge rusher and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
No edge and no loss on Keon Coleman in slot 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick73 Rnd3 Javon Bullard
A quiet steal in the 73rd overall pick: Javon Bullard for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick74 Rnd3 Cade Stover
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in Round 3, Pick 10 leaves edge rusher and tight end for later.
Pick124 Rnd4 Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves slipping to the 124th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
Pick136 Rnd4 Nehemiah Pritchett
Nothing to complain about; Nehemiah Pritchett went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick161 Rnd5 Isaiah Williams
Isaiah Williams at No. 161 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick175 Rnd5 Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten at pick No. 175 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick182 Rnd6 Isaac Guerendo
Good price on Isaac Guerendo in the 182nd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick187 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dwight McGlothern at pick 187 is the proof. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick229 Rnd7 Elijah Jones
They will replay Elijah Jones at the 229th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick235 Rnd7 Tahj Washington
Steal is underselling it; Tahj Washington at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick245 Rnd7 Logan Lee
Logan Lee at Round 7, Pick 25 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick250 Rnd7 KT Leveston
KT Leveston is a better player than slot 250 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick254 Rnd7 Evan Williams
Value with a capital V on Evan Williams in pick No. 254, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
