Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
Some hits, some head-scratchers, and a C+ for the Cowboys.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent pick 221 on Dasan McCullough, a name the board had a full 31 spots lower. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

Getting Nelson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Spending an early pick on edge rusher with offensive lineman, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 R Mason Thomas
In the 12th overall pick they get a premier pass rusher, reach and all. More want than need.
Pick20 Rnd1 Cashius Howell
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cashius Howell adds an edge rusher and leaves offensive lineman, tight end and other spots untouched.
Pick112 Rnd4 Demond Claiborne
They paid a round early for Demond Claiborne in pick 112, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick151 Rnd5 Lander Barton
Lander Barton at slot 151 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick178 Rnd5 Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jerry Wilson
Jerry Wilson in No. 215 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick221 Rnd7 Dasan McCullough
Value said wait; Dasan McCullough in Round 7, Pick 5 says they were not listening. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick225 Rnd7 Malachi Nelson
They robbed the room for Malachi Nelson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
