charge5 DRAFTING FOR THEBears
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bears did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Braylan Shelby at the Round 5 slot, a reach of 29 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
The Wheatley value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
LT Overton
In pick 25 they get a disruptor off the edge, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick57
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Value with a capital V on Emmanuel Pregnon in pick No. 57, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick89
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley in the 89th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jude Bowry
A tidy little value on Jude Bowry in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick164
Rnd5
Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby at slot 164 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick239
Rnd7
Rico Flores Jr.
Rico Flores Jr. at the 239th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick241
Rnd7
Da'Shawn Womack
They liked Da'Shawn Womack enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
