The Colts let Weigman fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-. Somebody in the Round 7 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Colts sat still while Conner Weigman, the No. 220 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking cornerback early while offensive lineman, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. Reaching for Klare left real value on the table behind him.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
A.J. Harris
A.J. Harris is a better player than Round 1, Pick 32 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick64
Rnd2
Max Klare
A premium they did not need to pay, Max Klare a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick96
Rnd3
Whit Weeks
No edge and no loss on Whit Weeks in pick 96; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick132
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
They bypassed pressing needs at offensive lineman, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Chris Johnson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick173
Rnd5
Jaden Greathouse
Jaden Greathouse at the 173rd pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick217
Rnd6
Jahiem White
Jahiem White at slot 217 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Peyton Bowen
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 249, where Peyton Bowen graded well above the range. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick254
Rnd7
Conner Weigman
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Conner Weigman in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
