FutureA+
A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a B+, for the Jets. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Jets shredded theirs for Eric Gentry. He came off 86 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. However the rest shakes out, Allar at that price is a win they earned. The Weeks pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back still on the board.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick 23 they get a franchise quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
Kayden McDonald at No. 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick42
Rnd2
Daylen Everette
They went early on Daylen Everette in the 42nd overall pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick54
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They did well to land Sonny Styles in slot 54, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick60
Rnd2
Trevor Goosby
No drama and no debate, Trevor Goosby went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Pick87
Rnd3
Joe Royer
A clean, defensible pick in Round 3, Pick 23 with a little surplus value in Joe Royer. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick96
Rnd3
Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
A wild overpay on Kenyatta Jackson Jr. in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick114
Rnd4
Whit Weeks
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Whit Weeks at linebacker with running back open.
Pick132
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in slot 132 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick178
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Steal is underselling it; Drew Allar at the 178th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick193
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Xavier Nwankpa at Round 6, Pick 12 is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick207
Rnd6
Dane Key
Dane Key is a better player than No. 207 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick209
Rnd6
Barion Brown
They talked themselves into Barion Brown at pick No. 209, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick240
Rnd7
PJ Williams
PJ Williams at the 240th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jamari Lyons
A big swing on Jamari Lyons at slot 254, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick255
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
A real head-scratcher, Eric Gentry in pick 255 is miles ahead of his ranking. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
