Draft Grade — Jets
Overall D-
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the Jets this weekend: D-.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Demon Clowney; the Jets did not wait, grabbing him 168 spots ahead at pick No. 240.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. It is not that Styles is a bad player; it is that the Jets had louder needs to answer first. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Peter Woods
In pick 2 they get a disruptor off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick16 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In the 16th overall pick they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick24 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
A curious use of the 24th pick. Interior defensive lineman and offensive lineman needed the pick; a linebacker in Sonny Styles did not.
Pick33 Rnd2 Carson Beck
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Carson Beck. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick44 Rnd2 Colton Hood
Nice patience on Colton Hood, who had no business lasting to slot 44. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick70 Rnd3 Anthony Lucas
A big swing on Anthony Lucas at the Round 3 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick103 Rnd4 Drew Allar
Value said wait; Drew Allar in the 103rd overall pick says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick175 Rnd5 Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby in No. 175 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick178 Rnd5 J'Mari Taylor
J'Mari Taylor at Round 5, Pick 40 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick194 Rnd6 Duce Robinson
A tidy bit of business in the 194th pick, where Duce Robinson graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick205 Rnd6 Solomon Tuliaupupu
This one needs a full-page explanation: Solomon Tuliaupupu in the Round 6 slot, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick212 Rnd6 Bud Clark
A straight-up fair deal on Bud Clark at pick 212, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick218 Rnd7 Kalil Alexander
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kalil Alexander well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick240 Rnd7 Demon Clowney
Demon Clowney in pick No. 240 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
