Draft Grade — Giants
Overall C+
ValueA- NeedB TradesF FutureB
The Giants let Leonard fall into their laps, and walked away with a C+.

You could see the war room lean forward. Riley Leonard at pick 202 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.

The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Kelvin Banks Jr.
Kelvin Banks Jr. in No. 13 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick38 Rnd2 Luther Burden III
You do not let a wide receiver like Luther Burden III reach pick No. 38 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick45 Rnd2 Jalen Milroe
They read the board right and Jalen Milroe was the payoff at slot 45. It fills a real need, too.
Pick70 Rnd3 Jabbar Muhammad
Jabbar Muhammad in the 70th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick77 Rnd3 Kenneth Grant
The board fumbled Kenneth Grant all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick109 Rnd4 Drew Allar
Taking Drew Allar in pick 109 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick134 Rnd5 Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at the 134th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick135 Rnd5 Will Sheppard
Will Sheppard in Round 5, Pick 7 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick136 Rnd5 Graham Mertz
Steal is underselling it; Graham Mertz at No. 136 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick137 Rnd5 Collin Oliver
They barely believed it either: Collin Oliver still on the board at slot 137. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick138 Rnd5 Keon Sabb
Keon Sabb at the 138th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick139 Rnd5 Jaydn Ott
Jaydn Ott at Round 5, Pick 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick166 Rnd6 Armand Membou
No edge and no loss on Armand Membou in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick198 Rnd7 DJ Uiagalelei
DJ Uiagalelei at pick 198 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick202 Rnd7 Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard in the 202nd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick205 Rnd7 Fentrell Cypress II
Fentrell Cypress II is a better player than pick No. 205 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick207 Rnd7 Gabe Jacas
The board had Gabe Jacas higher than Round 7, Pick 15, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick209 Rnd7 Dorian Strong
No drama and no debate, Dorian Strong went about where he belonged in pick No. 209. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick213 Rnd7 Theo Wease Jr.
They paid sticker price for Theo Wease Jr. in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick217 Rnd7 Brian Ugwu
A straight-up fair deal on Brian Ugwu at pick 217, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick219 Rnd7 Jake Johnson
Jake Johnson at No. 219 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
