Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Cowboys checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Isaac TeSlaa at the 174th pick, roughly 65 spots before his name belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They banked enough surplus on Jeanty to cover a lot of smaller sins. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In pick No. 12 they get a workhorse for the backfield at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
They read the board right and Jihaad Campbell was the payoff at slot 44. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick76
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
Cameron Williams at pick 76 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick149
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at the 149th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick174
Rnd5
Isaac TeSlaa
They reached a country mile for Isaac TeSlaa at the 174th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick204
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
They took Tahj Brooks at par in No. 204, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211
Rnd6
Hayden Conner
A big swing on Hayden Conner at Round 6, Pick 35, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick217
Rnd7
Howard Cross III
They paid a round early for Howard Cross III in the 217th pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
They paid sticker price for Cam Jackson in pick 239, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick247
Rnd7
Ethan Downs
Ethan Downs at No. 247 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
