FutureA+
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the C+ tells the story. Nobody else had Drew Kendall anywhere near slot 235. The 49ers did, by 57 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
However the rest shakes out, Starks at that price is a win they earned. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
The Mukuba pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver and quarterback.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In pick 27 they get the heartbeat of the defense. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick57
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Taking Malaki Starks in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick84
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston at the 84th pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
A want over a need in slot 100: Andrew Mukuba adds a safety while wide receiver and quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jake Majors
They did well to land Jake Majors in No. 138, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jacob Parrish
They will replay Jacob Parrish at Round 5, Pick 1 for years; that is how good the value is. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick147
Rnd5
LeQuint Allen
Value with a capital V on LeQuint Allen in slot 147, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jake Briningstool
They paid up for Jake Briningstool at pick 160 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick179
Rnd6
CJ West
They paid a round early for CJ West in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Connor Colby
No edge and no loss on Connor Colby in the 185th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
They took Desmond Watson at par in Round 7, Pick 11, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick229
Rnd7
Davin Vann
They left a pile of value on the table to take Davin Vann this early at No. 229. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick235
Rnd7
Drew Kendall
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Drew Kendall. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
