Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Steelers won the night they stopped Giddens from sliding. Grade: B.

Somebody in pick 231 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while DJ Giddens, the No. 165 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They are betting Cook proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

On the needs board they went 6 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
In the 21st pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick52 Rnd2 Trey Amos
They took Trey Amos at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick83 Rnd3 Jack Bech
Value with a capital V on Jack Bech in No. 83, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick122 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Kevin Winston Jr. in Round 4, Pick 21, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick163 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
They paid up for JJ Pegues at pick No. 163 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick225 Rnd7 Ja'Corey Brooks
A clean, defensible pick in pick 225 with a little surplus value in Ja'Corey Brooks. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick231 Rnd7 DJ Giddens
Taking DJ Giddens in the 231st overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick247 Rnd7 Brady Cook
Brady Cook at slot 247 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
