Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA+
Mendoza is the plan now, and the Commanders grade out a D. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Commanders would have aced it. Roman Hemby at No. 223 is 47 spots clear of where he belonged. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Everything downstream of Fernando Mendoza depends on Fernando Mendoza, and the building knows it.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Banks falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In No. 1 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick7
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In pick 7 they get a rangy last line of defense at fair value. More want than need.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kenyon Sadiq
They let Kenyon Sadiq come to them and pounced at pick No. 36. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick57
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
A edge rusher of that caliber at the 57th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick67
Rnd3
Anthony Lucas
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Anthony Lucas. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick71
Rnd3
Gabe Jacas
They reached into another round for Gabe Jacas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick102
Rnd4
Chandler Rivers
Chandler Rivers at Round 4, Pick 2 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick117
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
Value with a capital V on Zachariah Branch in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick129
Rnd4
Vincent Anthony Jr.
Vincent Anthony Jr. at pick No. 129 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at slot 134 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick145
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun in pick 145 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick163
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
Nothing to complain about; Bryce Boettcher went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick174
Rnd5
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at the 174th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick180
Rnd6
Josh Moten
A straight-up fair deal on Josh Moten at No. 180, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick183
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
The board had cheaper options than Trey Zuhn III at No. 183, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Raylen Wilson
Raylen Wilson in the 185th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick196
Rnd6
Keyron Crawford
A real head-scratcher, Keyron Crawford in slot 196 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
They paid up for Dominic Zvada at the 219th pick when waiting would have done the job. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick223
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
They left a pile of value on the table to take Roman Hemby this early at pick No. 223. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick239
Rnd7
Micah Morris
A premium they did not need to pay, Micah Morris a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
