Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D
ValueC

FutureF
McCarthy is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a D. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Camar Wheaton at Round 7, Pick 35 is 202 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Put together, it is a D.
Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick No. 4 they get a true top target at fair value.
Pick23
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 23rd pick they get the face of the franchise, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
They jumped the gun on Kris Jenkins, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick51
Rnd2
Jonah Elliss
Jonah Elliss at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick55
Rnd2
Kalen King
Kalen King in the 55th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick62
Rnd2
Rod Moore
By-the-book stuff, Rod Moore at pick 62 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick65
Rnd3
Blake Corum
A reach for Blake Corum in No. 65; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Value said wait; Zak Zinter in the 75th pick says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick97
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
Fair-plus on Roman Wilson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick125
Rnd4
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson at pick No. 125 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick140
Rnd5
Mike Sainristil
A clean, defensible pick in the 140th overall pick with a little surplus value in Mike Sainristil. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick146
Rnd5
Joshua Gray
Joshua Gray at pick 146 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick178
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell at slot 178 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick186
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
They took Michael Barrett at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick225
Rnd7
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Antwaun Powell-Ryland well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick236
Rnd7
Brian Ugwu
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brian Ugwu. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick255
Rnd7
Camar Wheaton
They talked themselves into Camar Wheaton at No. 255, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick256
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at Round 7, Pick 36 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
