Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueC NeedB+ TradesF FutureB
A passer of the future in McCarthy, and a D-, for the Cowboys.

The Cedric Gray pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 39 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is King.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 13 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick24 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 24th overall pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44 Rnd2 Jordan Morgan
The board had Jordan Morgan higher than the Round 2 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick56 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
Somehow Keon Coleman was still sitting there in No. 56, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick77 Rnd3 Trey Benson
They reached a country mile for Trey Benson at Round 3, Pick 13, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick87 Rnd3 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at the 87th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick111 Rnd4 Tyler Davis
They liked Tyler Davis enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick173 Rnd5 Kalen King
Kalen King in the 173rd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick233 Rnd7 Myles Murphy
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Myles Murphy at No. 233 is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick244 Rnd7 Sheridan Jones
Sheridan Jones slid further than he should have, and slot 244 is lovely value for the cornerback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick248 Rnd7 Evan Williams
Nothing to complain about; Evan Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
