The Seahawks jumped the board for Conner and paid for it: F. Some picks age like wine; Hayden Conner at pick No. 223 will need to, sitting 47 spots clear of his grade. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On value alone, Starks makes the weekend a net positive. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In the 18th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick39
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka in slot 39 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick41
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Malaki Starks worth more than the price. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick52
Rnd2
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at the 52nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick82
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte in pick 82 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92
Rnd3
Savion Williams
A straight-up fair deal on Savion Williams at Round 3, Pick 28, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick137
Rnd4
Pat Bryant
A reach for Pat Bryant in slot 137; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jack Kiser
Value said wait; Jack Kiser in pick No. 149 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Upton Stout
Upton Stout at the 172nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick175
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
They left a pile of value on the table to take Oronde Gadsden II this early at the 175th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick223
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
They reached a country mile for Hayden Conner at pick 223, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick234
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
They took Isaac TeSlaa at par in Round 7, Pick 18, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
