FutureA+
The Bears bet the future on Daniels. The board says B-. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Jayden Daniels is the Bears' quarterback, full stop. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Flournoy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
On value alone, Puni makes the weekend a net positive.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In slot 9 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Brian Thomas Jr. at the 40th pick is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75
Rnd3
Javon Bullard
The board had Javon Bullard higher than pick No. 75, and the safety fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick77
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in No. 77; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick114
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
They paid sticker price for Ainias Smith in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick116
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
They took Kris Abrams-Draine at par in pick 116, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick123
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Taking Dominick Puni in the 123rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick139
Rnd5
Beaux Limmer
Beaux Limmer in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick142
Rnd5
Will Shipley
A slide stopped in pick No. 142, with Will Shipley worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick143
Rnd5
Austin Booker
A reach on Austin Booker in pick 143; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147
Rnd5
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at the 147th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick148
Rnd5
Keith Randolph Jr.
Keith Randolph Jr. in slot 148 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick196
Rnd6
Trey Knox
They let Trey Knox come to them and pounced at Round 6, Pick 21. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick205
Rnd6
Myles Jones
They liked Myles Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in the 205th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick206
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand at No. 206 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
Pick207
Rnd6
Taulia Tagovailoa
Value said wait; Taulia Tagovailoa in Round 6, Pick 32 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick226
Rnd7
Omar Speights
Somehow Omar Speights was still sitting there in pick 226, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick253
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nathaniel Watson at the Round 7 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick254
Rnd7
Xavier Thomas
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Thomas at the 254th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick257
Rnd7
Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy in the 257th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
