The Raiders let Pegues fall into their laps, and walked away with a D-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Raiders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They banked enough surplus on Pegues to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In the 6th pick they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick37
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Nick Emmanwori in Round 2, Pick 5, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
They took Tyler Booker at par in pick 39, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick41
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in slot 41 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick67
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in the 67th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick68
Rnd3
Jaxson Dart
Jaxson Dart slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick73
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
They read the board right and Dylan Sampson was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 9. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick107
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
They let Danny Stutsman come to them and pounced at the 107th overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick144
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
By-the-book stuff, Oronde Gadsden II at slot 144 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick182
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
No drama and no debate, Dont'e Thornton Jr. went about where he belonged in the 182nd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick214
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
