Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Panthers for Johnson: B-.

Somebody in pick No. 83 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Panthers sat still while Chris Johnson, the No. 39 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.

Fields has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick19 Rnd1 R Mason Thomas
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a premier pass rusher, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick51 Rnd2 Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields in the Round 2 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick83 Rnd3 Chris Johnson
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 83 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick119 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham in pick No. 119 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick156 Rnd5 Aaron Graves
Aaron Graves at pick 156 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick157 Rnd5 Pat Coogan
They jumped the gun on Pat Coogan, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick198 Rnd6 Robert Spears-Jennings
A conviction pick on Robert Spears-Jennings at slot 198 that the board grades a round light. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick235 Rnd7 London Humphreys
They paid sticker price for London Humphreys in the 235th pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
