Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Quarterback settled, Simpson in the fold, and a B- for the Browns. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Browns spent their marquee pick on Ty Simpson, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
Getting Aguilar where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Jagusah reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Ty Simpson
In the 6th overall pick they get the arm they will build around, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24
Rnd1
KC Concepcion
In No. 24 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Keith Abney II
Keith Abney II in pick 39 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick70
Rnd3
Max Iheanachor
They jumped the gun on Max Iheanachor, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick107
Rnd4
Demond Claiborne
A premium they did not need to pay, Demond Claiborne a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick139
Rnd5
Nadame Tucker
Nadame Tucker in the 139th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick144
Rnd5
David Oke
David Oke at Round 5, Pick 6 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick147
Rnd5
Charles Jagusah
This one needs a full-page explanation: Charles Jagusah in slot 147, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick204
Rnd6
Trebor Pena
A quiet steal in pick 204: Trebor Pena for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick248
Rnd7
Joey Aguilar
Joey Aguilar at slot 248 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
