The Jaguars did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

It is a puzzling start. The Jaguars had interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots to solve and reached instead for Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE, at pick 79. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The McClellan steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Reaching for Nugent left real value on the table behind him. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In No. 17 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. More want than need.
Pick48 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
A quiet steal in No. 48: Adonai Mitchell for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick79 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A curious use of pick 79. Interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick96 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at Round 3, Pick 33 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick114 Rnd4 Cooper Beebe
No drama and no debate, Cooper Beebe went about where he belonged in the 114th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick116 Rnd4 Drake Nugent
A wild overpay on Drake Nugent in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick155 Rnd5 Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at pick No. 155 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick195 Rnd6 De'Corian Clark
De'Corian Clark in the 195th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick211 Rnd6 Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan at slot 211 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237 Rnd7 Fentrell Cypress II
Fair-plus on Fentrell Cypress II, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
