Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a B for the Broncos. The Broncos spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Torrence pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Every board in the league had Liufau lower, and that gap is the story.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 27 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Pick41
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Troy Franklin at Round 2, Pick 9 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jaylen Wright
By-the-book stuff, Jaylen Wright at pick 66 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick70
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
They took Xavier Legette at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick76
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Khyree Jackson. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick90
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. slid further than he should have, and No. 90 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Fisher in the 121st pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick126
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at slot 126 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick136
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
A premium they did not need to pay, Luke McCaffrey a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick145
Rnd5
Tommy Eichenberg
A straight-up fair deal on Tommy Eichenberg at slot 145, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick147
Rnd5
Marist Liufau
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Marist Liufau. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick203
Rnd6
Ro Torrence
Ro Torrence in pick No. 203 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick207
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A reach for Gabe Hall in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
