Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B+
ValueA NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
Larceny in No. 191 lands the Bengals a B+, Stutsman and all.

You could see the war room lean forward. Danny Stutsman at pick 191 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.

They are betting Henderson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.

They will answer for taking safety early while cornerback and quarterback went begging.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In No. 30 they get an anchor for the defensive front, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick49 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 2, Pick 17 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick55 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Circle this one: Malaki Starks at pick 55 is a fall that decides a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick62 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
A surprising call. With cornerback and quarterback still to address, they spent the 62nd pick on Xavier Watts, a safety they were not short of.
Pick95 Rnd3 Kaleb Johnson
They will replay Kaleb Johnson at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick117 Rnd4 Dylan Fairchild
Taking Dylan Fairchild in the 117th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick128 Rnd4 Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo at pick No. 128 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick152 Rnd5 Jake Majors
Jake Majors in slot 152 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160 Rnd5 Cam Skattebo
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach No. 160 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick164 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 164th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick175 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
They jumped the gun on JJ Pegues, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick191 Rnd6 Danny Stutsman
Somehow Danny Stutsman was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick218 Rnd7 Xzavier Henderson
Xzavier Henderson at slot 218 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
